Welcome...

...to...

...a word...

...about napkins...

Eateries are not only centers of pleasures but also cultural hubs. Cleanliness has been an issue since people first started to eat...

 Joyce napkin style

Table napkins have been used for quite some time now, mostly to keep lips, hands and laps clean...

...table napkins or serviettes are pieces of linen to protect the clothing and are used to wipe ones mouth and fingers at the table, beside other uses.

The use of table napkins is newer than the use of towels, like Oshi Buris for example. Table napkins were practically unknown in the Western world till about the 16th century. Up till then diners who could afford linen would use the table cloth to clean their fingers on. The French used to have doubliers, a second cloth and often a longiere, a third cloth just for the purpose of wiping one's hands. When napkins first showed up, such were more like towels, touailles, and those were fastened to the walls, for back then linen was expensive.
