At the time when his debts were paid off, his former master gave him a set of tools and good wishes for the future. Traveling to the South Nick stopped at many big plantations and smaller ones too. He repaired shoes for the owners and in return he received food and a place to stay as well as some form of pay. At this one plantation the owner asked him to stay for a lengthy time as he wanted him to train Tom a slave in the art to repair shoes. The offered pay was decent, the sleeping quarters were clean, the food more than adequate and no lack on mulattos to keep him warm at night. Nick much used to being offered a slave woman to sleep with, as part of the regular Southern hospitality, was unaware of the trend that many owners were interested in breeding lighter and lighter skinned slaves. For such purpose impregnation by a young strong man with fair skin such as his was much preferred over the same done by a black stud. It was at the time when near white female slaves brought record prices at market. For breeders only the value of the life-stock mattered. By this time all of the younger slave women showed sign of pregnancies in different stages, so did the plantation owner's daughter. Nick got his own shoe shop in town and soon was married to her the redheaded British American Southern Gal. Molly was born near the same plantation where her mother and her grandmother and her grand-grandmother and her grand-grand-grandmother had worked.
